Before the Program: Lucas’s Struggles with Motivation to Complete Homework, Responsibility, Memory, and Time Management
When Lucas was in Primary 4, he faced significant challenges with motivation and focus. His mother found herself constantly nagging him to finish his homework and study for exams.
She had to go through his school bag daily to ensure assignments were completed, and even then, he only worked reluctantly.
Despite enrolling in various tuition programs, including a five-to-six-month stint at Mindspace, Lucas’ grades declined rather than improved.
His third trimester results were disappointing, as he didn’t enjoy the tuition sessions and was not engaged with the learning process.
Traditional tuition methods focused on rote learning and external pressure, but they failed to address Lucas’ need for internal motivation and better study habits.
During the Program: How We Helped Lucas Transform into a Responsible and Motivated Learner to Excel in Exams
When Lucas joined our study skills mentoring program, we took a different approach. Our goal was not just to boost his grades but to develop his self-discipline and love for learning.
Lucas was paired with his mentor, Yee Kai, who acted as both a tutor and a role model. Yee Kai focused on helping Lucas find joy in learning and build effective study habits.
Throughout the 12-week program, Yee Kai actively tracked his progress, ensuring he consistently applied the study skills taught.
This wasn’t just about learning new techniques but ensuring Lucas applied them properly in his daily routine, which helped turn those skills into lasting habits.
The mentor worked with Lucas during weekly one-hour sessions to follow up on his progress, address any challenges, and teach new study skills.
Each session concluded with specific study tasks for Lucas to practice, ensuring he wasn’t just listening but actively implementing what he learned.
Between sessions, midweek check-ins were conducted to hold Lucas accountable for completing his study tasks.
This follow-up helped reinforce his learning, making sure that Lucas was consistently practising the skills and improving his study habits.
One key technique Lucas learned was the Memory Palace, which made studying more interactive and less tedious.
This creative method allowed him to remember information better, and Lucas began to look forward to his sessions with Yee Kai.
Yee Kai also introduced Lucas to structured time management. Using timers, Lucas learned to break his study sessions into manageable chunks, allowing him to focus for longer periods without feeling overwhelmed.
During the program, Lucas engaged in various activities designed to boost his motivation and responsibility.
One notable activity was the Spaghetti Marshmallow Challenge. This hands-on exercise not only encouraged creative problem-solving but also helped Lucas develop teamwork and planning skills.
Results: Lucas Became a Motivated, Responsible, and High-Performing Student—Completing Homework and Other Tasks on Time
By the start of P5, the transformation in Lucas was remarkable. His academic performance improved dramatically across all subjects.
His English grade went from 70 to 75, Mathematics jumped from 60 to 70, Science soared from 54 to 79, and Chinese increased from 68 to 77.
These improvements were not just about numbers—they reflected Lucas’ new confidence and ability to approach his studies with a positive mindset.
Unlike previous tuition programs, Lucas was now eager to engage with his studies. He even reminded his mother about upcoming mentoring calls and ensured he was ready on time, a complete turnaround from his previous behaviour.
Lucas’ father also noticed these changes and appreciated the discipline Lucas had developed.
The whole family benefited from this new dynamic, as Lucas’ independent learning habits meant less stress and more peace at home.
He became more responsible and no longer needed constant reminders from his parents to complete his homework or study for exams.
Lucas took charge of his own learning, independently managing his study schedule, and setting personal goals for improvement.
With the time management strategies he learned through the program, he was able to break up his study sessions, spreading them throughout the day.
Now, Lucas could study in the morning, take a break, and continue in the afternoon and evening without feeling fatigued or frustrated.
His parents, especially his mother, saw a huge shift in Lucas’ overall demeanour. He became more confident, not just academically, but in taking ownership of his responsibilities.
